Traditional British pub in Durham

"The Bishops’ Mill" in Durham, England, is a historic pub that belongs to the well-known British Wetherspoon chain, distinguished by its central location in the Walkergate Leisure complex, near the Gala Theatre. The name of the pub pays homage to the historical mill that stood nearby for centuries. This so-called Bishop's Mill was first mentioned in the Boldon Book of 1183 and served as a place for the free citizens of Durham to grind their grain. In the 17th century, the mill was rebuilt and remained in operation until 1972, with the mill race later being used to power a nearby ice rink. This rich history is reflected in the pub's interior, where pictures and texts commemorate the region's past.

Wetherspoon pub with outdoor terrace

The ambiance of the Bishops’ Mill is typical of a Wetherspoon pub: spacious, casual, and welcoming. The interior offers a variety of seating options, from cozy nooks to high bar stools and regular tables, suitable for both solo visitors and larger groups. Notably, the outdoor terrace provides a view of the surroundings and is a popular meeting spot on mild days. The pub carries the nickname "Lloyds No. 1," meaning it often transforms into a lively bar in the evenings with DJs, a dance floor, and colorful lighting—contrasting with the relaxed atmosphere during the day. Large screens regularly show sporting events, attracting a diverse crowd that includes students, families, and tourists.

Fish and chips at Wetherspoon

Culinarily, the Bishops’ Mill represents classic British pub cuisine with a focus on versatility and generous portions. A highlight is the traditional "Fish and Chips," featuring freshly battered cod served with thick, golden fries—a dish that captures the essence of British comfort food. Equally popular is the "Full English Breakfast," which robustly starts the day with crispy bacon, sausages, fried eggs, and grilled tomatoes, complemented by unlimited coffee refills. For meat lovers, there’s the "Gourmet Burger," made with juicy beef and savory toppings. Vegetarian options include a spicy vegetable curry, while desserts like the "Sticky Toffee Pudding" sweeten the conclusion of a meal with its warm, sweet sauce.

The drinks menu is another strength of the pub, reflecting the Wetherspoon tradition of offering a wide range of beers. Particularly notable are the traditional cask ales, which change regularly and often come from local breweries, making them a magnet for beer lovers. The selection is enhanced by international beers, a solid wine choice, and a variety of cocktails that are especially popular in the evenings. For those who prefer non-alcoholic options, there are soft drinks alongside freshly brewed Lavazza coffee available throughout the day. The bar is the pulsating heart of the pub, creating a lively atmosphere that is both busy and friendly.

The Bishops’ Mill is a social hub known for its flexibility. It opens early in the morning and serves food until late at night, making it ideal for breakfast guests, lunchtime visitors, and night owls. The use of the Wetherspoon app, which allows guests to order food and drinks directly from their table, enhances the service and is appreciated by many patrons. The staff is known for their efficiency and friendliness, reinforcing the relaxed vibe. The pub is family-friendly and can accommodate larger groups, whether for celebrations or casual meet-ups, while its accessible design ensures that everyone is welcome.

We went for breakfast. It was cheap but not so cheerful... the bacon was so well done it shattered everywhere when lightly touched. Everything was thrown on the plate. The two fried eggs were stacked one on top of the other... Never seen that before!!! Needless to say they were overcooked! The little butter packs were liquid, perhaps keep them somewhere cooler? Self service tea and coffee station had no milk. You get what you pay for I guess!

Absolutely lovely place, the decor was great as was the atmosphere although it does get quite busy and noisy, we were all served at the same time which was great the food was delicious. Ladies be prepared when you go to the toilets though as when you walk in it's like a hall of mirrors, there are also some comfy looking chairs in there so if you get stuck waiting at least you can sit down and freshen your makeup if you need to.

Excellent pub. I just wish they would turn the music off until around 9pm as it is a Wetherspoons pub
